Emotional Self Care

Are you struggling, emotionally? Lets take a look at some ways to help heal. Its time for some emotional self care my friend.

Taking care of your self emotionally is often ignored, I know this from personal experience. Although there are other self areas to work on, for example physical and spiritual. I want to focus on emotional. I am an extremely sensitive and emotional person, are you? Do you have an issue with holding in your feelings until you explode? Do you overreact? Or do you express your emotions in a healthy way?

Emotions happen (new bumper sticker haha). This is just how life does us, situations occur and an emotion is usually the result. That is a good thing! Are the feelings under control? Sometimes not.

More Than Medicine

I’m not ashamed to admit that I have suffered from anxiety and depression for years. Can anyone relate? Now of course there are medications that can help. I wont knock it , medicine has helped me. However, even though medication might be involved, you still have to work on yourself! Or you might just end up getting pissed off at your doctor.

Take care of yourself!

Here are some ways to help with emotional self care.

  • Ask for help. Life can be too much at times and you don’t need to handle everything by yourself.
  • Write it out. Write down how your feeling and what is making you feel this way. So you can start to figure out your triggers.
  • Boundaries! Healthy boundaries are so important.
  • Journal. You can journal about anything you want. Not just what is making you emotional
  • Rest. Make some time for you to just relax.
  • Meditation. I learned meditation and breathing exercises at one point and it does help.
  • Stop putting yourself down.
  • Tell yourself positive affirmations. start each day with a positive affirmation!
  • Go do something nice for yourself.
  • listen to music
  • get dressed up and make yourself feel good!
  • Take a walk
  • create a gratitude list.
  • garden
  • cuddle your pets
  • light some candles

That list is only examples and can have so many other things added. Everyone is different. Actually, I forgot to mention crafting and this is something I love. Although, I’m not a good painter, I have realized that when I’m painting, its all I think about. I have a clear head for once and its great. The best part of this was that I wasn’t trying to do something to make myself feel better and it just happened.

No one is perfect

I am still working on using these tools. Sometimes I over react and than later wonder why I did that in the first place. I know I cant be the only one that does this. Actually, I share my feelings when writing blogs. Maybe people don’t want to hear it, but it helps me. I even wrote about my feeling of fear with blogging here.

Growing up, my mother had such a different way of dealing with anger. She used to go and grab a dish and just drop it on the kitchen floor. It must have been her coping mechanism when she got mad. Oh and I mean it had to be extreme anger she was feeling to do this. However, later when everything would settle down, she just cleaned it up. I actually smile about this because being a mother/wife gets crazy sometimes. So her breaking a dish when she was pissed off, probably did feel good. haha

Like I said earlier everyone has different ways of dealing with there emotions. This is about self care and being able to deal with them in a healthy way. So if you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, stressed, upset or anything lately, take some time for yourself. I know, your way to busy and have no time but you have to make time for you! Its so important. If you aren’t taking care of you, how can you take care of anything/anyone.

If anyone has been working on self care and would like to share what they do, Id really love to hear about it. Leave a comment and let me know if you got any ideas! *liz
